The biggest single channel: VA Supportive Housing (VASH)
About half of everything the chapter spends goes through the VA Supportive Housing program, and it has done for more than ten years.
The chapter buys preloaded debit cards sized to each family — a set amount per child, plus veterans taking college courses. VASH staff inventory the children and hand out the cards. The chapter never contacts recipient families directly.
Cards are distributed twice a year — at Christmas and at back-to-school. The chapter never contacts recipient families directly — VASH caseworkers do that, which keeps the help private for the people receiving it.
How emergency assistance is funded
Every figure on this page is Chapter 227’s own, taken from the treasurer’s annual letters, by calendar year, through 2024.
Since June 2025 one of the programs behind those figures — emergency financial assistance — has been funded in part through a separate charity the chapter created, the Northern Virginia Vietnam Veterans Foundation, which says the chapter still receives and verifies every request and still pays the creditor — a description Get Help does not yet agree with. The Foundation reports its own totals, over its own period, and none of them appear on this page. Nobody has yet said how the two sets of figures relate, so they are not shown together and must never be added.
